it's a sorta song contest.

loads of countries get together, release a song (usually very cheesy) and then they battle it out to the final, where 1 country will win

we havon't won in ages...then again, we do have some awfull tallent.

It started out as a Europe wide song contest & was purely about who produced the best song that year.
Songs were always of a similar style - very sickly sweet, nothing radical, songs that were popular not only with your parents but also your grandparents.

Gradually, it became more popular & extended beyond Europe into the Russian & Baltic states & into Turkey/ Greece & even Israel.

Over recent times with the fragmentation of Europe into ever more numerous smaller countries, so that what started out as 12 - 15 countries now has over 50 participants that need streamlining through 2 semi-finals down to 25 countries taking part in the final contest this evening.

The winners are voted for by the public of each individual country & the voting has less to do with who is the best & is more influenced by voting for your friends & not giving any points to the countries you do not like.

Therefore all the countries created by the break up of Yugoslavia vote for each other (despite years of hatred & killing each other) in an attempt to keep the peace. All the Scandinavian countries vote for each other as no-one else can understand them, all the Baltic & Russian states for each other.

The countries can record the song & perform it in their own language or any other language they choose, with the majority choosing to record & perform in English, although the UK used to win every now & then, (they still create the most record sales throughout Europe) they will never win again under the current format due to what is called "political voting" - the UK has made itself unpopular throughout Europe with its support for the USA over Iraq & Afghanistan.

The UK & France have historically a love/hate relationship similar to that between the US & Canada. The UK & Germany still bear grudges following WWII. The UK & Ireland & Malta & Cyprus always vote sympathetically for each other under the Commonwealth alliance, Switzerland, Austria & Germany all are best buddies - the list goes on & on....

What used to be the big countries in the competition (UK, France, Germany, Spain & Italy) now have very little chance of winning due to the corruption of "political voting"

The most famous past winners of Eurovision are ABBA, & it was the launch of their career with "Waterloo", this years favourites are the Ukraine, but the bookies are not always right!

Yessss.. I did some homework on this Eurovision thingy yall are talking about and i'm actually watching the semifinals right now, it's true. Smile

OMG I think I love Sweden, tehe. And that chick from Albania, I have no idea what shes saying, but she moves me. lol This should be really good tonite. I'm so going to try and watch tonite with you all online at eurovision.tv . I hope it's really good. I have never seen anything like this before here in america. This is the 1st time I get to have my say in Eurovision, Niiice. Wink

I loved the show. That was just awesome really. I wanted Russia or Greece to win. I think those 2 had the best songs.

Last year, in Belgium, the commentators spoiled the results...
This year, in France, the god damn commentators never shut up, even during the bloody songs...

I think I'll go on the site and re-see it so as Ican actualy hear the other songs
