| On www.zonebbs.com people told me that it wouldn't work with Jaws my screen reader. So if I ever need a new computer or if this one decides to break I'll ask the tech guy to add Window 2000 pro like it already has. I heard Firefox has a talking web browser, is this true? | |

| What's the service 2 pack? If you want to hear the computer talk, go to narator. If you want a screene reader go to www.nvda-project.org, I like that one better. Here's another one www.freedomscientific.com you can download a Jaws demmo for free. | |

| Right, I believe a little explanation will be in order here. I will not play the one who knows it all, ut Iam noticing thatwe are talking of different things, so I will, if you ^permit me, attempt at summarising the whole thing in one point. Gemini, you have been told that vista is not working with JAWS. Now folks, in the case you don't know this, JAWS means job access with seech and it is a screen reader used by blind people. There is a voice synthesiser and, you can also b it is optional, have a braille display. I mention this, Gemini, because we are not all familiar wth this on this forum and some of us may not know what we're talking about. I will tell you then that the latest updates of jaws 8 work now with Vista and as the 9 version is soon to be reeased you will be able to use it better even. Now, to you, Morgan, as I believe it is you who started this topic, I confirm that with or without a screen reader, Vista is about as good as Bush's presidency, loads of bug, not much accomplishment, and unnecessary issues. If you have XP service pack 2 you are more than fine, mate. Nessa, I will try firefox. Internet exploder 7 has a great tendancy to piss me off considerably. Last note to Gemini, I repeat, if you got a version that is not JAWS 8 but with the update, no, you can't use vista. Thanks for your patience folks. John | |

Okay thank you I want it for its look mostly, theres no extra software I like about it, I just want it to look like vista. I have been looking around for Vista theme for XP, and I found one, and now I lost it! I must say, you type very well for someone who can't see the keyboard!

| where do you thnk microsoft got the tabs idea for IE7? ...Firefox IE7's filtering system for activeX i was told they got off Opra they find good bits and use them making a mess, vista does not see you as administrator of your pc, IT is
i tested IE7 and even booting the pc was slower, took IE7 off and i was back to a faster booitup & faster browser with Firefox, the problem is, IE7 has a built in proxy it wants to log into taking time to open your home page when you clikc the icon, i didnt find out how to disable it, i uninstalled IE7
as for Vista, i have heard so many bad things, like when it was first out, its anti virus & firewall is as bad as the old firewall and no antivirus on XP when nobody had compatible programs, you had to rely on the built in stuf that is not very good,
a friends pc was hacked, they couldnt get past her pro firewall we put on her XP tower, so they got through the crap microsoft one on her vista laptop, hacked that and used the direct conect from 1 to the other to hack her tower.

| Well mate, you are absolutely correct as far as I E 7 is concerned, i will add to this, however, their new feature of fishing filter or whatever they call it. Here at work we have a local area network, and they came up with the bloody idea of installing I E 7 on all our computers remotely. Now, you have rightly uninstalled it. Be aware, however, that windows update will offr that to you every time you will want to make updates to windows. and I won't be much surprised if they come up with a sort of bugt to make the install of that bloody I E 7 indispensable. Perhaps you remember the problem encountered by many users in the end of march? When after an update there was an error message regarding a DLL file not working? Then they came up with a little file to fix it, which indeed people had to go look for on microsoft website. And what came with it again? I E 7 of course. And, while appologising to get a little bit off topic now, I warn all of you about an email that is supposedly sent by gmail team, urging you to veryfy your account lest you be disabled within the ext week. DO! OT! use that code which is given at the end of it. Same goes with the warning of updating your skype data. As fr windows vista: No, thank, and if that goes on when this computer of mine dies, I'm getting a mac! Cheers to all. John | |

| if you are worried about security on vista, Zone Alarm Security Suite is vista compatible, it is a firewall with antivirus (from Kaspersky) and ant spyware all in one,
its very though and will do auto updates, auto scans and has email & spam protection, as well as anti advertising filters and msn/yahoo instant messenger filter to block spam, you can choose what programs get net access, unlike the built in vista firewall that allows microsoft to monitor your pc, personally its my pc, they can mind their own business.

| all i can find out is on XP you can use FTP in the xp firewall uncheck "use passive ftp"
but using Vista & IE7, theres a problem with both of them & FTP, vista dont like it and IE7 hates it, i seen in the vista help forum (run by tech's not microsoft) they was saying to try another browser like Firefox or Opera,
also someone said that he uses SmartFTP client for FTP on Vista, the war-ftp sever works on Vista 64bit i seen a post for it http://www.warftp.org/ and its free, i did see some other info:
FTP service is available in Vista Ultimate edition (and also, I think, Business and Enterprise editions). Go to Control Panel, Programs and Features, Turn features on or off, Internet Information Services. You'll find the ftp options there.
Vista Home Edition does not appear to have any FTP service (although it does have some web server abilities).
this is about all i can find on it as Vista isnt as widely used at XP & like me a lot of people prefer Firefox to IE7, IE7 is slower and is a huge security risk as it still uses activeX (spyware hitches a ride on activeX staying hidden because the browser needs t) Firefox does not use activeX and is safer, voted the no.#1 browser & 1/2 of it is owned by google.

| I suggest that you try firefox instead... There are still quite a number of bugs waiting to be found in IE7...
Now about Vista... its still too raw for me...
I am actually brooding about vista for quite some time now because it litarally forced me to upgrade my PC. I am a writer during my nightly escapades and laugh if you might, I still love my ancient clunker of a PC...
But with the new games now, you'll really have to use vista just to play them because direct X 10 is exclusively for this resourece hungry monster...
I'm really disappointed as a consumer because as I've said, I'm only a writer so I don't need a high end computer; though I must confesss that I am an occasional gamer as well.
Now I'm torn into buying a system to cater my gaming needs, which is directly violating my computer's main purpose of helping me with my literary work.
