Rapper T.I., who was arrested on Saturday on federal weapons charges,
will remain in jail until a hearing later this week. Prosecutors want
him held without bond until trial, which could be months away.
T.I., born Clifford Harris, was taken into custody in a shopping center
parking lot where federal officials said he planned to pick up machine
guns and silencers he had his bodyguard buy for him.
The bodyguard, it turns out, had been arrested earlier in the week by
ATF agents, seen at the rapper's home. After telling officials the
weapons were for T.I., he agreed to arrange a meeting.
The arrest meant the self-proclaimed "King of the South" couldn't
perform as scheduled at the second-annual BET Hip-Hop Awards. He won
two awards in absentia, including a shared honor with Common, pictured.
The 27-year-old Atlanta native, a convicted felon, won two Grammy
awards in February and topped the charts this summer with his album,
'T.I. vs T.I.P.'
After the arrest, Harris' home in suburban Atlanta was searched by
agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
